Remembering Beirut

16th September 1982

Around 2000 innocent Palestinians and Lebanese civilians were massacred by a Lebanese militia and the Israeli army within a few hours. The Sabira and Shatila – Palestinian refugee camps – were raided  by the Christian phalangist group backed by the Israeli army a few hours after the assassination of the Christian President-Elect Bashir Jemayel. Women raped, babies shot, men slit apart. Entire families murdered in cold blood.

American reaction

President Ronald Reagan was  ‘horrified’ by the attack.

‘’All decent people must share our outrage and revulsion’’ he said.

Justice

A judicial enquiry was made into the matter and the Israeli Foreign Minister Aerial Sharon was held responsible. Sharon resigned only to become the Prime Minister years later.

11th september 2001

A bunch of terrorists hijacked three planes and the symbols of America’s economic power came crumbling down killing thousand of innocent civilians. The crime committed, as per Sheikh Mohammad’s statement, was for the ‘awakening’ of the American people. For telling them that America must stop it’s support to Israel.

American Reaction :

(The statement was incidentally made on the 16th of September 2001)

‘’…….this crusade , this war on terrorism is gonna take a while.’’ said Bush.

Justice

9 years down the tragic event millions of innocent civilians have been killed in the name of peace.

16th September 2010

Nobody remembers Beirut.

For what happened in New York – the killing continues.

Is there something called ‘human blood quality’ ?

  2. “There is no such thing as right and wrong. There is only power and those too weak to seek it.”

US has power, Palestinians don’t. Pakistani’s don’t. you can cry over it and vent your frustration (it’s your blog after all!). It may sound harsh and you may even take the moral high ground. But it won’t solve your problem. That’s the cold truth.

I would focus on making myself stronger (legitmately of course!) if I want others to respect me and take me seriously, rather than be a whiny whimp who expects others to change for me and treat me fairly.

  3. 1983

If speaking your mind on ugly facts despite knowing that there’s nothing you can do to change things is ‘whinning’ and ‘crying’ then so be it. Everyone’s free to ignore the ‘noise’.

  4. @1983.I also wish I could make myself so damn ruthlessly strong and ‘legitimately’ too…like Israel./no such thing as right and wrong/..the you also talk of legitimacy? You sound too hypocritical.

  5. Saudi people here are too attracted to that city due to full freedom in other senses, u know night life, but apart from that i found Lebanase people beautiful, talented and posses good mangerial skills :-) we have our procurement department there, i might visit soon, i visited cairo in 2008 and i can say with complete authority that Islamic word should be removed from Egypt :-D amazing Turkey is another place i would love to visit as well, so we coincide atleast on travelling part, though i am sure i would convince you also on political part when you will see me live speaking like Faisal sabzwari :-P (haha)

    • oh ho! MQM politics is too dangerous. I won’t like you to get wasted =p

      good luck anyways!

I endorse MQM when they are right but there are things you can never convince me about. You’ve tried and failed once =p

Anways this is supposed to be a serious topic =|

  6. i haven’t tried to convince you yet :-P, will do it if i get a chance, so you better watch out, we have writing on the wall for another fight :-P jokes apart i believe in actions more than words, i personally go with the one whom i think is making all the right calls, whether it’s mqm or any abcdef, i am not opinionated at all, i guess i couldn’t deal with you properly on that subject.

oh we have Pak politics in beirut, ok you love the trash, go ahead :-)

  7. Venting out frustration and vowing to keep at it has been the reason for continued massacres of Muslims.

And if you go back to the war of Lebanon you have quoted, “we-the-glorious-Muslims” have been the culprit.

Recently Saudia underwent exercises to give its air space to Israel to use against Iran !!! And the WHOLE WORLD has witnessed the whole Muslims world’s silence.

At least the same amount of Muslims could have come to protest against Saudia, as had come to protest against the burning of the Quran.

There is a time for crying and whining. But then one has to stop it and DO something about a problem.

We Muslims love to be seen as a “group”, and “ummah”. But we forget how hypocritical we have presented ourselves to the world.

All we Muslims want is sympathy. And all we can do against our enemies is ANNOY them. Throw stones, throw a rocket or two, kill their civilians, then start crying for sympathy. And at the same time be silent about crimes Muslims among us commit.

Such behavior doesn’t earn respect, and sadly, as a whole, we don’t even seem to want it.

  8. Salman,

I have talked about Sabira and Shatila specifically. I have not talked about the ‘war’. This is what happened at the END of the invasion. Don’t put words in my mouth.

And no I am not one of those whose proud of the crimes committed by her fellow citizens and fellow Muslims. I am not ‘we are muslims and therefore saints’ or ‘we are Pakistanis and therefore the best’ types.

This post was about HISTORY about HUMANITY about JUSTICE.

Read more of my posts before formulating an opinion about me.

Oh and no I dont believe there’s anything like muslim BROTHERHOOD on state level these days.

    Thanks.

    • I don’t think a single statement of yours is in response to a single statement of mine.. Please hold your anger :)

Though, in my opinion, your post was not about Sabira and Shatila specifically..
your post was about Muslims not getting justice.. that Muslims are of lower blood quality, Sabira and Shatila as an example.. because of your concluding remarks about comparison with New York.

I mean that’s how I read it. And my post was in response to that perception..

And I nowhere talked about Muslim brotherhood at state level. I was talking about the ostrich like behavior of normal Muslims, who conveniently ignore to even express the usual anger against Muslim states backing Israel for its crimes.

I was not talking about hypocrisy of Muslim governments, I was talking of hypocrisy of common Muslims..

And lastly, I was not forming ANY opinion about you… the whole point of my post was that we as a group are perceived as hypocrites (and rightly so), and that is the reason the rest of the world has no respect for our “blood quality” .. We show the world that we ourselves have no respect for “this and that” sect’s blood quality..

My only difference with you regarding your post was that Muslims not getting justice should not be blamed on anyone, or compared to anyone, when we have states like Saudia, Guardians of the Haramain Sharifain, backing a state like Israel.

  9. Salman,

If Saudi is backing Israel or going against Iran that means whatever happens to weaker Muslims in other countries is justified. People shouldn’t raise their voices against injustice because the leaders are screwing up – That’s what you’re precisely trying to say.

About Sabira and Shatila – I stick to what I say. It was about justice and I don’t see why’s the comparison hurting you so much when it is JUSTIFIED. I believe you apply the argument of whinning and crying to those who can’t think beyond 9/11 too :)

    • Not again. Which statement of mine meant I was against raising a voice against injustice ?

I am simply talking about common Muslim hypocrisy around the issue as a reason for our voice not getting heard.

Don’t stop raising your voice. But understand and not judge others when it doesn’t get heard. I found your post not impartial against the injustice, but biased against one party of your choosing.

If Vietnam could fight America back, without resorting to the everlasting “revenge” mentality of trying to bomb school children, I’m sure at least the same amount of Muslims can do that too.. The only hindrance seems to be weakness of character, of everyone involved.

I am as much against the injustice btw, so please do apologize about the “hurting you so much” phrase :)

And I am ever so confused about the comparison now, is it that Muslim victims of 9/11 got “justice”, the Palestinians didn’t get any ? :P Ok forget it.

  10. Cairo is a good place, but horrible traffic, food quality in comparison to Jeddah wasn’t impressive either, very expensive city, there are lot of places u know Nile, Pyramids, Museum, al azhar, but if you are on business trip and you have enough money to spend you will enjoy all the fun. Down Town(wastal balad) another eating, shopping place, American university is another place to visit. The best thing i liked about Egypt was visa embossing, they did it with in half an hour without any kind of inquiry and delay :-)
    Have a good trip.
